Some parts of Asia – certainly not “Asia” in general! – have traditionally celebrated the New Year based on a lunar (well, a lunar+solar adjusted) calendar. That’s when family gets together; that’s when feasting takes place; that’s when a “new beginning” is promised. And good for them. I lived in Hong Kong for 18 years and that was part of local tradition. Elsewhere in the world – including most of Asia, in fact – these celebrations are associated with other periods. The 1st of January, for example, though there’s no inherent reason why that is more significant than, say, the 23d of April or the Twelfth of Never. We (well, our predecessors and ancestors) just decided that was a good time to have that family gathering / feasting / “new beginning” and it stuck. No reason you have to celebrate either. No reason you can’t celebrate both. And throw in those cultures (e.g., Islamic) which use a strict lunar calendar, so that their “New Year” wanders all over the map, if looked at in terms of our calendar!

We got as ready as we could in our half-awake state but we were in a Lunar New Year Shirt Chinese Zodiac Of The Year Of the Tiger T Shirt of pajamas and slippers and various states of dress looking a bit like jesters. I hadn’t remembered drinking much but I had a strong urge to use the restroom before leaving; I didn’t want to make that back-country drive again with a full bladder so I told my parents to wait for me a minute. But this freak show was about to turn into full-on horror. I had never seen such a thing before. My mind struggled to comprehend that what I was seeing could be real. The bowl quickly turned a dark crimson while what looked like cherry Kool Aid flowed out of me. My heart began to race. We quickly piled into the car.
And honestly there are so many Chinese people in other countries comparing to Vietnamese and Koreans, like in Chinatowns. They built the place and they were there way longer than us. It’s not fair when we come in and Lunar New Year Shirt Chinese Zodiac Of The Year Of the Tiger T Shirt tell them to change the name of their traditional festival because of us. For example if Vietnamese people moved to Nigeria 500 years ago and celebrate Tet every year, then all of sudden Chinese come in and demand to change it to lunar new year. We would be pissed off and annoyed. I think it’s fair to leave it as Chinese New Year especially in Chinatowns around the world, but maybe if you are saying it to a Vietnamese person we would be so happy if you say Happy tet or chuc mung nam moi to us. Because it shows you care about us.
