When I was 12, my mom started keeping a 2 year old. His mom was like this girl’s Dia De Los Muertos T shirt . Open about her partying habits but sent him to us dirty and in clothes too small for him. He told her once when she was trying to get him to hurry up to leave one morning (she had the graveyard shift then) that he had to make his bed first because “we have rules here.” He often came to us with bruises and cigarette burns. Later in life, about 10 years ago in my 40s I contacted him and found out that the abuse was so much worse than we could see. He was so happy to hear from me because we were the only family he felt he ever had. Figure out a way to foster her. Or let someone else. You are only seeing the tip of the iceberg.

I’d always calm her down. She thought I was patty, & I began to just go along with Dia De Los Muertos T shirt . Also, in the 3.5 months I was there, her health declined further. She kept asking why she was in the new house (her & my grandpa had 2 houses. My aunts sold off the old one along with all their valuables when my grandpa died. Greed. Grandma had no clue). She would cry for her husband, wanting to know where he was. I was torn. What is the right thing to do? I decided that keeping her calm & happy was the priority. I told her, “don’t worry ‘mom’.

Halloween night is a rough time to be passing this sort of bunch, they would regularly aim fireworks at people from their Dia De Los Muertos T shirt, I felt this planned attack so again I used the same strategy, show awareness and readiness. It was too far away so simple gestures weren’t going to cut it, I pulled out a chain, swung it slowly around to wrap over my fist in clear view of the reflection of street lights, the intention again was made clear, and again thankfully there was a small hum then silence in my direction.

I was a nerdy teenager with a short, round build and a serious Dia De Los Muertos T shirt . People were always mistaking me for someone much older. And I wasn’t dressed as a Naughty Nun, or anything disrespectful….I was dressed as an actual, authentic, kind-you’d-see-every-day nun. I had a knee length black skirt over beige tights and sensible shoes. I was wearing a white blouse and gray cardigan and carrying a big, clunky black purse. I even had the layered veil, black over white, not the big chapel veil but a short work veil like the nuns at the school and hospital wore.
