Our garage was lined with large tanks in which we hoped to breed, and eventually sell, the offspring of the various fish. I think, if my memory serves me correctly, the Mollies, the Platies and the Guppies gave birth to live babies, which was fascinating to watch. I say breakfast, because there was many a night, husband being away, that I sat in a cold garage, trying to keep my eyes open as I slowly froze, waiting for the births, in order to rescue the newborn. They would be a source of income, we hoped, for a young couple, just married, who’d spent every penny they had on a house and were struggling to pay the mortgage.

If we looked at Canada’s housing market from a macroeconomic standpoint, it is absolutely impossible for housing prices to pull back even 20-30%. Why? Because it would devastate the Canadian economy and absolutely destroy our way of life.So what can we actually hope to see? Most notably, interest rates, interest rate policies, 21st centurey economics, immigration, and the overall wealth generated by people in other countries.

You reduce demand (immigration, banning foreign ownership) and increase supply (rezoning, expedited permitting, land value tax, direct building, enforced vacancy tax).It is deliberately NOT being fixed because most voters and politicians are homeowners. NIMBYism is a cancer and it is killing this country. Given the complete unwillingness of governments at all levels to increase supply, the federal government should cut immigration to a small fraction of what it is now to help balance the market. Failure by the government, but really a failure of the Canadian public and our democracy in general.
