Back when I was a libertarian I made similar arguments with more right-wing libertarians about why it was understandable that communism had some appeal among marginalized groups in the US and around the world. That said, I do think there’s a problem with the line I quoted, at least with regards to this specific example, because this goes beyond whether they know what’s best for themselves, they’re actively justifying the oppression of people in another country. I don’t think being oppressed in your country is justification for supporting oppression in another country (especially from people in a First World country talking about a developing country). I’m sure there were many Soviet dissidents who understandably had an overly rosy view of the US, but that nonetheless doesn’t mean it’d be ok for them to justify Jim Crow or Japanese interment or residential schools because the US was the Soviet regime’s ideological and geopolitical enemy.
