This story is about my friends MIL, and her wedding. Strap in guys, this is a Sonic Characters Ugly Xmas Christmas Sweater Christmas Gift in which I did THE THING that got me banned from any of her family functions. (Plus a few threats of dismemberment and bodily harm) A good friend of mine from university was getting married! They had been a couple since Junior year of college, through her 2 years in the peace corps and currently her return to this continent. 6 years in total. She had been to all manner of family functions and always came back with a strange story about how she thinks her MIL secretly hates her. But she being a very quiet and sweet person pushed those thoughts aside. Point 1: She is vegetarian and jewish, husband is not. She was invited and went to Christmas dinner and figured she would just eat sides, as well she brought a vegetarian casserole. MIL, after knowing her for THREE years, and being told by husband a few weeks before about not to forget friend doesn’t eat meat…proceeded to put meat in every dish. Friend drank water and ate her casserole the whole night while MIL cried to everyone that friend was so rude for not eating her cooking. Anyway, back to the story. A few friends and I were asked to be in the wedding. Friend has a HUGE family and so this was not going to be a small affair. Neither of them is particularly religious, but friend said it was would be nice to be married under a hoopa. (Think an arbor but 4 poles and covered with a white cloth and lots of flowers) Husband said he could care less, and told her to go and rent one for the wedding. I was at the bridal shower when MIL found out the “pretty canopy” was actually a hoopa. She almost lost her shit in front of a bunch of people, but managed to compose herself and laugh angrily that “if the jews were being represented so would the catholics.” In my head I heard a record screech, guys… they aren’t catholic.

Forecast said it’d actually be clear by 2-3am and for the next week, but that we were in for gale force wind and 15-20 inches of snow between now and then. I got an email from my boss telling everyone in my office to work remotely until Monday, January 6. I was somewhat relieved to not be leaving Sash here alone, but the email also made me realize how badly I’d wanted to get the hell outta here for a full day. That night we lit the candles, binged a show for a while, then sat at the counter before bed drinking tea before bed. The blizzard was rippin outside. An hour earlier I’d heard a tree go down in the woods above the house. The weather radar showed the storm was gonna pass soon, but it really wanted to kick and scream before moving on. The howling wind and creaking of the house was spooky, causing Dash to pick his head up and look around from where he was lying on the kitchen floor, but sweet jesus would it provide a nice reprieve from the ghosts’ wicked racket. I stepped over Dash to put my cup in the sink, when all hell broke loose. A loud metallic pop jerked Sasha, Dash, and my attention toward the kitchen door to the porch. The second after the pop, the piercing shriek of the blizzard wind sailing through the thin strip of open air around the door filled the kitchen. The door hadn’t been shut all the way, and had popped open. It’d happened before; a deceiving ‘click’ in the bolt that made it sound closed. The only thing holding it from blowing wide-open into the kitchen was the little hook-lock on the old, thin, flimsy screendoor on the inside of the door frame. Within a half second of the storm’s shocking infiltration into our home, the thin, strong blade of wind screaming through the crack in the main door whipped into my face making me blink, tossing my hair back. Wind.

It took me F O R E V E R to find a cut of Sonic Characters Ugly Xmas Christmas Sweater Christmas Gift that worked for me and my shape. I’d go to Madewell and be like “This is what’s in style? I ended up getting some straight leg mom-jeany pants that actually look really cute on me from Old Navy and it turns out I fit perfectly into their standard sizes and now buying non-skinny jeans is a cinch. And then I got pregnant and now I’m back to a skinny jeans and tunic top silhouette because there’s no point in trying to be trendy right now and that’s what covers the belly I did treat myself to an oversize blazer though and I think that’s a really fun look!
