I served in Vietnam early on as an enlisted Marine…a volunteer, not a Softball Dad Vintage USA American Flag Father’s Day T Shirt. I did 4 years in the Marines, was wounded, medivaced, finished my enlistment and headed off to college on the G.I. Bill, starting in 1967, the height of the Anti-War movement. My plan was to finish my undergraduate degree and reenter the Corps as a career officer. (I ended up retiring 22+ years later as a lieutenant colonel.) I, of course, as a combat vet, had a case of what was later called PTSD. One Saturday night in my freshman year at a friend’s off-campus apartment at a party, some long-haired guy said “You were a Marine…did you serve in Vietnam?” I told him that I had, and he called me a “baby-killer”. I punched him so hard his head went through the sheetrock wall…only on one side, not into the next apartment.

I hope not because that’s the way I’ve done it ever since leaving my parents’ house at 17. We always had the Softball Dad Vintage USA American Flag Father’s Day T Shirt Christmas Day opening growing up, but that’s in part because our grandparents were there too. Once on my own, for some reason it seemed to make more sense (to me) to have a nice dinner and open the presents on Christmas eve. That left Christmas day to do whatever. Not much was open when I was younger, so it could be a day of quiet, relaxation and reflection. Some of my friends always did it on Christmas eve … especially as I recall my Catholic friends. Often they went to Midnight Mass and also had services on Christmas day. My church had a midnight service, but they more or less suggested adults only. And unless Christmas happened to be Sunday, there was no Christmas day service.

Most Christian countries have a public holiday on the 25th & 26th. So in 2018, the Softball Dad Vintage USA American Flag Father’s Day T Shirt went: less tha one day of work, two days off, and two unproductive workdays. Many companies enforced the taking of 4 days annual leave during Christmas week & the following Monday (in Oz we usually get 4 weeks discretionary leave (take it when you want)). Economically, a better idea is to make the secular Xmas on the last Sunday in December, and the following Monday New Years day. Leave the religious aspects to the religionists to commemorate their observances in heir own time. Muslims, Jews, Eastern Orthodox Christians and other religions do so every year successfully, why not Western Christianity? And to keep workers happy where public holidays might be lost, replace them with the Friday before & Monday after the last Sunday in December with public holidays. At at least that way business has two weeks of four contiguous workdays, and people can do something creative with the long weekend (nb: in Oz, January 1st is a public holiday, so that could be replaced by declaring the first Monday in January a public holiday. Thus the workers get two long weekends in a row, and three weeks of just 4 workdays).

Owing to the different cultures in Westeros (and Essos), I don’t think there are many regular events that correspond to what we call as “festivals” in our world. At least, because of the Softball Dad Vintage USA American Flag Father’s Day T Shirt state of affairs during the timeline of the books, it’s highly likely that the festivals weren’t mentioned as being celebrated. However, there seem to be a number of associated “festivities” that celebrate regional events and individual landmarks in various societies. Winterfell has hosted a harvest feast for centuries, and it should fall around the same time every year. Because of the POV nature of the series, and the war going on, we may not have seen a harvest festival in some of the other regions. For the Faith of the Seven, something called the Maiden’s Day was observed, and I would guess that the other six (well, probably not the Stranger) would have their own day/festival as well. Among the Dothraki, after a khal weds, he takes his khaleesi to meet with the dosh kaleen at Vaes Dothrak, which could be considered as a ceremony as well. Also, there’s the stallion heart ritual that Dany undergoes after she becomes pregnant. The followers of the Drowned God, in the Iron Islands, have an extreme “baptism” ceremony, where an infant is drowned in the sea and brought back alive. The Burned Men, one of the Mountain Clans of the Vale, have a rite of passage involving a boy cutting off a part of his body and burning it, when he comes of age.
