They’re lucky to have double income and full-time work now. To be safe, Tuula belongs to a Rip Her To Shreds Blondie Shirt union with an unemployment fund and legal services included in the 350€ yearly fee. Matti subscribes to a private unemployment fund for the moment with an annual fee of 150€. (Or the other way around). They won’t have to rely on minimum social security in case of unemployment. At least not right away. They have two cars and two saunas. The family car is a 2013 Volvo station wagon. The second one which they call ‘a shopping bag’ is a 16 year old beat up old clunker. Hey, it still works fine! The upkeep of cars is a significant expense item. Right up there after housing, above food. Housing is expensive. Inflation shot up around year 2000 so Matti was lucky to buy a house just before. Gas and cars are taxed heavily (as well as alcohol and tobacco) to try and push people to use public transportation where possible. Food however is relatively cheap.

Lockerbie, Wednesday, 21 December 1988, 7.03pm Bunty Galloway had just sat down in front of the television to watch This is Your Life. Outside it was windy and cold. No one was out on the narrow street in front of her house. Many of Bunty’s neighbours were also watching TV and others were wrapping gifts. It was four days before Christmas. Suddenly, Bunty noticed a strange noise. She had never heard anything like it in her life. It was coming rapidly closer with a rising groan and title as if at any moment the noise would make the house explode like a kettle under pressure. When she got to the door to look out, the roar had abruptly stopped. Now it was dark and quiet. The electricity had gone out.

I’m a mother of 3 children, they’re adults now. But when I come back in time, in my memories, and I see them as newborns, babies, toddlers during Christmas time, I reflect about Mary and her baby. She was engaged in the religious practice and she was faithful. It makes me think that she probably knew the scriptures well, and the prophecies about the Rip Her To Shreds Blondie Shirt. If she knew those prophecies well, she was aware that the Messiah was not supposed to have an easy life but a life of suffering and pain. As a mother of a newborn we wish the best of happiness to our baby, but Mary probably knew that her baby would have pain, instead. How was it for her? How did she deal with it? Mary knew through the angel that her little Jesus had a divine mission in the earth. She knew that he was the son of God and it probably remained in the back of her mind all the time while feeding, bathing and teaching him. I see a woman that raised a child for a cause to the world. I see a woman that was able to put God first in her life above her own child. I see altruism and a heart full of love. I see a mother that loved her own child and loved all of the other people as well. It inspires me during Christmas time and I think that the world will be better when altruism and love becomes more abundant. That will be a world where one is seeking happiness to the others. That will be a glence of heaven.

As part of the clearing up process, I will take any leftover potatoes and Rip Her To Shreds Blondie Shirt (if we didn’t leave enough potatoes or sprouts, I may have to cook some extra) and mash them up in a bowl, with plenty of salt and black pepper and a chopped up onion, and perhaps any leftover beans. This gets tightly covered and put into the fridge, for the flavours to get together. This is important for the next day. The next day is known as Boxing Day in the UK, and was traditionally the day when servants in grand houses received their “Christmas box” (usually a present of money, and sometimes new clothes) from the Master and Mistress, and were allowed the rest of the day off, to go and visit their families. In our house, it usually means our grown-up children all reappear for a late breakfast, a full-on fry-up of bacon, eggs, sausages and bubble-and-squeak, which is the leftover potato, sprout and onion mixture from the previous day, fried in a fairly dry pan. If the large breakfast doesn’t happen for some reason, then the bubble-and-squeak happens in the evening instead, with slices of cold chicken and gammon, and perhaps home-made chutney.
