But what came out of it was the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte, a military genius who, for all his faults, knew how to use his new military capability and reform the way armies were structured. His reforms are still the backbone of how western militaries operate today, down to the medals we wear, the regimented structure, and even the vocabulary (where is the “r” in Colonel?

My parents were married on December 19th, so we always put the Christmas tree up on their anniversary. We were always told to get to bed on time, because Santa couldn’t come if we were still awake.

So no, these festivals were not “hijacked.” It is merely that masses of people who had once celebrated them decided not to observe them, or their religions comprising them; and decided to celebrate other things, with the guidance and consideration of their disciplers.
