The night I got a phone call from a social worker in the emergency room of hospital X in city Z that my son had been hit by a bus. I instantly knew which son it was because he was the only one in that city attending college there. I could hear my son’s voice in the background yelling at someone to quit cutting his clothes off so I figured he wasn’t too badly injured. The semester-driven pace is gone as well. The level of effort is more constant, although most people still disappear around vacations. My mom had to pull me away. He seemed relieved however, he did promise me he would come. When they were served on Christmas Eve my grandmother would always brag about how I had helped make them and I remember feeling so proud! Both my grandmother and great grandmother are gone now. I miss them every day. Now I’m the grandmother, or Nane, of a two year old granddaughter, Madeleine Frances. We buy the cannolis shells now but I still make the same filling. It’s almost Christmas. I still have my grandmothers meat mallet. The Hershey’s bars are in the freezer. I bought Madeleine an apron.
