Why is any sport popular anywhere? Why are people fans of any particular sports teams? The answer is the exact same for college sports and professional sports, just with the usual added points about extra loyalty to “my school” and all the fan traditions that you get sucked into when you experience it. Oh, and the best rivalries! There are a ton of people here in a ton of places, and a lot of high level organized sports became established at the collegiate level first. The former means there are plenty of markets for it, and the latter gives us the history that led to now, as opposed to a bunch of minor leagues with farm teams being found everywhere (or the multi-tiered “sports club” model more common in Europe). Imagine if towns like Logan, UT ignored their college teams! If you’re a football fan in growing up in Alabama, even before you actually attend a college, what’s around you? College football. You probably watch the Saints or Falcons or whoever, but the fun of watching sports – being a sports fan – is at its fullest on Saturdays, so that’s what you really get sucked into. Even if you are in a major market with corresponding major professional teams, the quality/value of the on-field/court/ice product itself is extremely high, and the traditions surrounding it all make being a fan of [whatever team] fun and engaging. When the Rams and Chargers moved to LA, the crowd at one USC game was bigger than the Rams and Chargers crowds combined on the following day. Ticket prices probably aren’t the same, but the key to that story is that the people there were USC fans, and it’s most fun to go to games of your favorite team, even if it’s not the highest level. So yeah, people who love sports love sports. College sports have been a part of American sports ever since spectator sports became even a remotely big thing. Don’t over-think it. (Also we get to have standing rowdy fans with blaring bands and reinforce the alma mater connection, which feels nice.) As for high school sports, the only places where they’re particularly popular (beyond current student body and the immediately adjacent community) are the small communities where that’s the main sports show in town.
