It seems that Karen did take steps to acknowledge her reverence for the dolls as being both racist and highly offensive, while Scarlet’s apology – as far as I can tell – coincided with a title being taken from her and thus apologised potentially only to save face/as damage control which we are of course used to seeing throughout contemporary pop culture. That isn’t to say I give Karen a pass. Scarlet has now won two challenges back to back. While we are watching her succeed, we are also entirely aware of her racism. If that was the case, why get her to lipsync for her life? As an aside, I honestly can’t tell if Art was unjustly sent home early, if she just happens to be a queen whose talent doesn’t translate onto the show or if she rightfully deserved to be in the bottom because this particular season just feels so… Off and brief are the only words I have. And I don’t view that as a dismissive statement of the season. There is a fundamental lacking overall in DRDU that is making wider Drag Race issues very noticeable and in terms of racial issues that plague the series, not easily ignorable. Art being brought back was not only baffling because it felt so early, but there was also zero justification for it or any explanation as to why Coco and Jojo weren’t there. At least do the terribly unfair vote to bring someone back like UK2. If it was COVID-related (like they already came back to Aus etc.), just say so.

I think the lack is that it’s pretty obviously an extremely incapable and inexperienced staff. there’s focus issues in the physical shots, the Normalize Critical Thinking 2021 shirt  of background music and sound effects is like 90’s morning radio show tier frantic awful-ness, it’s clear that no one in casting did any kind of double check into contestant history. and without a more capable production staff to kind of cover the cracks, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that Ru and Michelle are no longer able to just connect with contestants as seamlessly as they used to, and it’s especially obvious in international franchises. to put it bluntly I think we’ve reached an amount of time the show has been on and a generational turnover in the shows preferred casting demographics that has just made it so that the references that come naturally to most new contestants do not gel at all with what Ru and Michelle are familiar with, and rather than kind of bend to getting some sort of familiarity and judge after that research, they operate under the mentality of “if the queen making references can’t MAKE me get it, then it’s THEIR fault that I don’t understand” so contestants that play into Ru and Michelle’s established references (American pop culture from 1932-1997) typically get off a lot easier
