The newspaper, radio and TV stations were there covering the free Christmas trees. This went on all day and there were still lots of trees left. We returned the next day, there were even bigger crowds. The media was there again. It was a good Christmas feel good story.

It isn’t very old tradition in Finland, but it’s a very natural decoration that was easy to adopt. (There is an ancient tradition to decorate houses with small birches in Midsummer, so a christmas tree feels like a good equivalent in the winter).
