Not sure if I am alone on this but, I don’t really see this as being successful. A story that no one really asked for is becoming animated. Just why? Animation for the Silmarillion origin story or any of Middle Earth’s early history is far more fantastical than the Liberty America since 1776 shirt  stories. Big opportunity to leverage animation to show the really crazy visuals, and a far more interesting tale to tell.They don’t have the rights to the silmarillion and probably never will. Generally, I feel like most LotR content besides the movies has been like pissing on Tolkien’s grave. I wish we could just leave LotR alone and not potentially tarnish its legacy with sub-par adaptations.It’s the opposite. Jackson wrote the script that Del Toro was going to use. But Del Toro had different visual style, so when he left a year’s worth of pre-production had to be scrapped. And that meant redesigning everything: the scabbard of Goblin #4 in Goblin-town, the hat worn by Female Lake-Town Fisherman #2, the random basket in the corner of Dale’s market

And to be clear, redesigning everything isn’t an issue in and of itself. The Liberty America since 1776 shirt   was designing so many things for this world takes time, a year or more, and del Toro got that time. Jackson didn’t. When he inherited the film from del Toro they had to start filming very shortly after without nearly enough time for him to redesign everything. He did as much prep as he could for the start of shooting, which is why the first Hobbit movie is pretty good, but eventually he was building the railroad track an inch ahead of the train barreling down.I’d say it was specifically what they added in to get 3 movies. There’s easily 8-12 hours of content in the hobbit, if it was paced more deliberately. But they added in generic Hollywood color-by-numbers stuff like romance plots and Alfred that really detracts from the rest of the film.He only ever wanted to exec produce it, but had to pick it up after a bunch of studio meddling. Honestly most of the issues with The Hobbit can be boiled down to 5 studios fighting each other for cash. Even going as far as lobbying for law changes in NZ and fucking over NZ actors union.I wish we got to see Del Toros original vision.
