When Delores spent his first night actually out with the other chickens in the Kansas Jayhawks Blue Special Edition Hawaiian Shirt, NCAA, I was anxious about how he would handle himself, as he was pretty shy. After a few false starts (and getting pushed off perches by the other chickens) he chose a walnut branch that lead to the night perches and slept on that. When Delores became a big, beautiful Golden Phoenix adult rooster, I thought the hens would probably make absolute fools of themselves trying to get his attention – and if he ignored them it would serve them right! I suppose I should have done something about the name – but Delores responded to “Delores” and appeared fine with it. (Also, my Aunt Delores would have been devastated if I changed his name.) A friend suggested calling him “Del” – which sort of made sense – but that sounded like he was lead singer in a retro 60’s band. As long as Delores didn’t mind – and let’s face it, he didn’t care – I was perfectly content to have a sweet rooster named Delores.

Rugby has something the NFL lacks — the tantalising prospect of representing your country in a meaningful international competition. In the 24 years of pro Rugby Union, the USA have traditionally had a rag-tag bunch of professional players ranging from second generation migrants from rugby playing families like Samu Manoa, who was playing amatuer rugby in the US and was talent scouted from a US reserve team tour into the top flight of European club rugby, to players like former USA captain Chris Wyles who was born in the states but moved to England as a Kansas Jayhawks Blue Special Edition Hawaiian Shirt, NCAA and played his rugby in Europe. One of the guys from our school team in England ended up playing for the USA at the Rugby World Cup because he had an American born mother. If rugby takes off in the US as a semi-pro / pro club game, there is every likelihood of good college footballers switching sports and America producing a team of majority home-grown talent, but unlikely it will include many ex-NFL players, if any.

We don’t tend to do anything radically different to the rest of the world where Christmas decorations are concerned. Santa’s still wearing a big red suit, there are reindeer, even snowmen and plenty of artificial snow – some of which looks like cobwebs to me, but there you are. We still have Christmas trees covered in tinsel and with stars or angels on the top of them, depending on your preference. I’ve occasionally seen decorations which make a bit of a nod to where we actually are in the world. Santa-on-a-surfboard, kind of an idea. Several years ago, we had a tradition of driving around looking at the Christmas lights other people had put up, and I can definitely recall seeing images of koalas and kangaroos with Santa hats and the like. Overall, though, Christmas decorations tend to look like they’re from the northern hemisphere, since a lot of our “Christmas cues” come from that part of the world, regardless of how warm the day itself may actually be.
