According to DM, he intended to have Errakyon be an antagonist for much longer, but allegedly I roleplayed out a damned good argument. Pretended to be a Jack Skellington and Irish Four Leaf Clover shirt of Umberlee to distract a bunch of dock workers while Captain Fahren could sneak into a warehouse and liberate a group of people. She basically swayed her hips, said “Umberlee sent me with a challenge: Whoever can beat me, can have me!” And then proceeded to throw most of said workers in the water when they attacked her. Umberlee made it quite clear that if Spinel ever invoked her again without actually being a worshiper, she’d capsize every vessel she stepped upon.

1: Let the players play and discover what they want: I was very stern in my young days. I had this one new player ‘Vincent’. He was new to the Jack Skellington and Irish Four Leaf Clover shirt and starting at first level. I thought the best thing was to do was solo him and get him to higher level so he could compare with the other characters that were already higher. I put him on a ‘crash course’ of solo level gaining, which was what I thought he needed. Long story short — he lasted one day. Looking back, I played how I wanted but not how he wanted. I never asked him what he wanted to do in the D&D game. Soloing is fine if that’s what they want. Ask your players what they want to accomplish in the D&D world?… Some players will want to tame a dragon. Some want to build a castle. Some players want to become a powerful Wizard and wield arcane spells. This all really depends. Find out what the players want, and see if you can entertain them… look! You find a Dragons egg! D&D has to be more about what the players want to do, and less about what the DM wants. Long term players are what fuel the game. Find out!

It’s probably obvious that I don’t advocate Mind Flayers being used as small scale villains. They’re just not that great at being that thing in a Jack Skellington and Irish Four Leaf Clover shirt with treasure. Save them for something big. They might have their use as an information-giving NPC, but their powers tend to either mean they can trivially defeat the PCs (if the PCs can’t resist their mental attacks) or the PCs can trivially defeat them (if the PCs can resist those attacks and draw them into melee), so they’re not great for random encounters. If the PCs do make deals with the Mind Flayers, remember the bit about them being alien intelligence and talking in pictures; make those encounters unique.

The family has moved into their own home now, an older home (still nice, but no high ceilings and not many elf hiding places!), and the children have both multiplied AND grown older, taller, and Jack Skellington and Irish Four Leaf Clover shirt.
