She pointed the pork chop at me as the I Wear This Periodically For Ugly Christmas Sweater I’m with start giggling behind me. And just for reference, they are two hijabis (kind of a slang we call young fashionable women in hijab) and I am not. I am the waist length wild curly hair trying to eat my head person. I pointed at the pork chop and asked why she had it. To which she responded she was waiting for me. UGH… GUYS…. There it totally a leak somewhere! She knew about the time of the Iftar party and was walking around trying to find us with a fucking pork chop! Hijabi 1 asked RedWhine if she was going to eat it, because she was hungry. Which seemed to piss her off since she yelled that she KNEW we didn’t eat pork! At this point I’m DYING; I have that ugly holding back laughter but not breathing face on. Friend and husband come jogging up as she’s lecturing my hijabi friends on their own religion. Something something Trump, deported, and god’s wrath for non believers. (You have to take this crap with a grain of salt) Husband gets between us and is yelling at RedWhine to leave and we all make a hasty exit down the road. I’m walking backwards watching her flail this pork chop around and point it in her sons face. And finally I just can’t hold it and laugh, full belly absolutely cannot hold it back anymore laugh. She points the pork chop over his shoulder at me and WHINES that he is hanging out with terrorists and she can protect him. (Apparently with her pork chop saber!) Husband pulls out his phone and says he’s calling the police, and like fucking smoke she disappears in the other direction. Glorious. Apparently she was telling him to come with her back home, that her sister was coming to get them (her) from our city of Sin and terrorists.

An old, familiar sensation hit me in that moment, one that’d taken hold of me before, but I’d long forgotten. It was a I Wear This Periodically For Ugly Christmas Sweater of calm acceptance that can only happen at the very end, a pure contrition to the whim and caprice of chaos. It’s not a surrender to, but a communion with the terminal violence around you. It comes in those moments when firefights get really bad, the air is boiling with noise, friends are shrieking at their own blood, you can’t move, you need to move, you have broken fingers, broken ribs, a concussion, blood in your mouth, dirt in both eyes. It comes in that final moment when panic gets so extreme it just collapses into itself, cancels itself out. It doesn’t come when you think you’re gonna die. It comes when you know you are about to. Maybe these men had felt it in the end. Dash and I stood there, side by side. My wife behind me, Dash’s momma behind him, facing an ancient and ravenous manifestation of fury and retribution about to smash into our home, to bring butchery into our most sacred space. Our primate and canine muscles were coiled and revving with violent tension and anticipation, ready to explode into whatever came through that door with every possible ounce of brutality. Creeps took a step back, lowered his shoulder, then… spun around and tore away from the house. I felt it before she had to say anything. “It’s lit, they’re all lit!” Sasha screamed.

I just wanted to give you a I Wear This Periodically For Ugly Christmas Sweater of support. I 100% agree with all of your “dated” examples and I’m not a particularly stylish individual, I lived in the Midwest for the last decade until 2022. If anyone is offended by your examples I have to say, sorry but those are all things I’ve seen done to absolute death for like the last 10 years in Nebraska so if you are reading this thinking, “by golly how dare OP, all my dresses are fit an flare!” It’s not OP, it’s you. You also make some excellent observations about frumpy. Frumpy for me is fit and intentionality. Fit is an overwhelming factor but intentionality is a big part of it too. For me, I will say that I am very minimalist stylewise, but attention to accessories and fit and drape carry my like “mono-tone beige outfits.” Treat stains right away, hanging clothes right away so they aren’t wrinkled, snip those run away threads and replace those buttons – all that makes a huge difference even when what you are wearing is unremarkable and bland. Clean cut is perfectly acceptable, frumpiness to me has an air of like… lack in care, attention and maintenance in all things, not just the specific style elements of an outfit.
