Context is important. You have to consider that at the time Tolkien wrote these stories, most people spent most of their lives living close to home and didn’t travel often. They also didn’t have access to all the media that we do. When people celebrate movies like Hostel 2, and Aftershock, and The Green Inferno, they are celebrating atrocity.
