As someone who has almost 0 legal knowledge in terms of statute of Dallas Cowboys Skull Flower Ugly Christmas Ugly Sweater admission of guilt, and overall just sex crimes – what legal proceedings can go from here? Like, personally, I find it almost batshit insane that people can waive off pedophilia and rape with a twitter apology and self-imposed exile from Smash events. Where are the legal ramifications? Some of these guys were accused of having sexual relations with minors or attempting to while others straight up admit to these accusations and disappear. Am I taking crazy pills? This isn’t meant to be inflammatory but I am genuinely interested in knowing what legal actions the victims and community can take against these offenders – especially the ones who’ve admitted to the crimes openly. Hi everyone, I’m not too active in the scene here anymore, but I’ve gotten back to lurking recently with all the stuff happening, and I wanted to quickly comment on one of the more concerning trends that I’ve noticed on here. For the most part, the discussion of events that I’ve seen on here, while chaotic when things first come out, tends to coalesce into a healthy, reasoned, well-intentioned conclusion. I do believe that most of the people here genuinely care about the victims and about making this community safer for everyone. And I believe that those who don’t care about those things will quickly move on to another community. To get to the point, I’ve noticed more than a few users on here speaking critically of all that’s going on, who describe these current events as “lynchings”. Now listen, I’m not black myself, so I am by no means an expert on the topic. However, it’s important to remember what lynchings actually are, and especially the implications of the word in American culture. Lynchings were, for lack of a better word, a cultural institution in the American South (and even America as a whole) between the end of Reconstruction and the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1968. According to the NAACP’s website, around 4,743 lynchings occurred in the US between those years, and those are simply the confirmed ones we know about. Lynchings were a way for embittered and emboldened southern white supremacists to enforce extrajudicial power over black people, and were often done as a public spectacle in broad daylight, with the clear intent being to promote fear and panic among the South’s black communities. People died in these events, which continued unchecked for nearly a century in the United States. Lynching as a practice still lives vividly as a memory for those black people old enough to have been around during those times, and the effects of the practice have profoundly affected not just them, but the cultural psyche of our nation as a whole. All this to say, holding abusers to account for their shitty actions is not a fucking lynch mob, and I think that it’s irresponsible to throw that word around in this situation. I want to be clear in that I do not condone attacking people with no evidence, or hate mail, or death threats, or any such action. But the response from the community at large has been, in my opinion, overall reasoned, and not comparable even metaphorically to a “lynch mob”.

Of course those are human-defined war crimes. By Federation customs, eating a burger or allowing with the Dallas Cowboys Skull Flower Ugly Christmas Ugly Sweater are true crimes and predators have no rights. If you don’t consider your foes to be people, things like making a false mating call to attract unsuspecting prey is fair game, like what human hunters do. I don’t think the Federation has well-defined war crimes since there haven’t been enough interspecies wars against “people” to hammer them out. There may have been similar agreements in the pre-contact history of member races, but such policies are long forgotten and even if they weren’t, they wouldn’t have been exactly the same. It might be a tangent, but I wonder how different species’ rules of war would differ, assuming they bothered with them at all. Not all of our war crimes are self-evidently obvious. For example, our blanket ban on chemical weapons means that using tear-gas is technically a war crime while many countries still use it for riot control. You can mow down or explode enemy soldiers, but you can’t incapacitate them with tear gas. In WWI, Germany argued that using shotguns should be a war crime, but that didn’t go anywhere. Pretending to be a civilian or pretending to surrender are war crimes, but pretending to be a bush or using mannequins are not. While I understand the former 2 are to discourage soldiers from gunning down civilians or surrendering soldiers, I can imagine a culture that finds other sorts of deception to be terrible. Alternatively, a culture that discourages surrender and expects civilians to resist the enemy might balk at rules that makes this easier/safer. They might not have the same distinction between soldier and civilian. Attempting to escape a POW camp is not a war crime, even though almost all POWs are put there after surrendering. I could
