I had recently moved across the Cunt Logo shirt to be with my boyfriend (at the time) and so I barely knew anyone in the new town I was living in so my 21st birthday celebration was probably much more low key than most 21st birthday celebrations are. The night before my birthday, my boyfriend and I had gone out to a restaurant that was open until 1:00am so that at midnight I could order my very first legal drink. That evening we had one drink and then went home. The next day on my actual birthday (a Saturday), we went out to my favorite restaurant for dinner, then went over to a bar near our house where we met up with one of my new coworkers. After having one drink with her, she had somewhere else to be and being homesick, and not much of a drinker, I wasn’t much in the mood for partying so my boyfriend and I headed home where I ate too much cake and too many Cheetos and then fell asleep early on the couch watching movies.

Genuinely patriotic, by which I mean loving the country more than yourself, while understanding what the United States is actually meant to be based on our history and Cunt Logo shirt our founding documents? In order, I would say: George W. Bush, who loves the country as it was meant to be, loves its history and role in the world with all its contradictions, and also loves his countrymen despite all of their imperfections. Barack Obama, who loves the country as he believes it should be, loves the fact that it has overcome its defects enough to elect him twice, and is willing to forgive those of his countrymen who weren’t enlightened enough to vote for him. That’s it. Both Clinton and Trump are such toxic, self-centered narcissists it is unlikely that either of them can truly love anything beyond themselves.

Donald Trump is allegedly their president too. From the Cunt Logo shirt he came into office Trump debased himself before Vladimir Putin, and continues to do so to this day. When his administration is tossed on the dung heap of history, and an honest reckoning is performed on his years in office, we will learn a lot more about what Putin had on Trump. That the GOP was complicit in selling the country’s foreign, defense, and economic policies to the Kremlin is going to come out too. I make sense of the French President’s statement as meaning: yes, certainly patriotism is a love of country. But nationalism is not a blanket love of country, it is more narrow and sometimes quite a bit more narrowly focused.
