My interest was Jesus (as is your daughter) but my husband is not as religiously oriented as I. So I loved going up the hillside country of Nazareth to see the Cover The Earth White T Shirt of the area that Mary raised her son and where she grew up. Everything in Israel that is Christian is marked by a church or near one. But then again, during the time of Roman emperor Constantine, (Constantinople, i.e. Turkey’s Istanbul today) and the Aga Sophia – …..he sent his mother the Queen Helena to Israel so she would find all the places that Jesus once trod and made famous to the many new converts to Christianity in the early years after his death. So Queen Helena did a great job for her son and hence, churches “galore” everywhere or so it seems.

There’s a Cover The Earth White T Shirt of tradition of going out for Chinese food on or around Christmas in the US. So far as I can tell, this largely originates from large cities and in particular from Jews living in New York. Consider the cultural landscape of the earlier part of the 20th century. Jews, of course, do not celebrate Christmas, so they’d be more likely than the Christian majority to go out to eat then, as opposed to their celebrating neighbors who are likely at home with family, roasting their own turkeys and such. And where do they go on Christmas? Well, most restaurants are going to be closed, because their predominantly Christian proprietors and employees are also at home. The major exception, then, was Chinese restaurants. The immigrants running those places were less likely than average to be Christian, so they had no cultural tradition of shutting down on or around December 25. So if you’re a Jewish New Yorker who wants to go out for dinner on Christmas, it’s Chinese food or nothing. This practice may have been popularized in particular by Calvin Trillin, the noted food columnist for the New York Times. He was himself Jewish and wrote a marvelous column about his wife wanting a “traditional holiday dinner.” What she was talking about was the idea, coming in from outside their cultural world, of turkey, mashed potatoes, and so on, but to Trillin, his traditional holiday dinner was going out for Chinese.

When different Western European pagan cultures were evangelized to, the Cover The Earth White T Shirt (the traditional Catholic order of missionaries) tried to be mindful of not needlessly erasing new disciples’ culture. These disciples only needed to abandon the sinful parts of their culture, to follow Christ. Unfortunately, some of these parts slipped through, effectively syncretizing Catholicism somewhat with these pagan religions—hence, veneration culture; undue fixation on Mary the mother of Jesus; etc. However, the intent at least was always to keep from putting unnecessary burdens on new disciples’ backs. These evangelizers were looking out for those they were taking under their wing. In that sense, these peoples’ cultures were actually preserved: at least far more than they would have been, were their newly Christian-identifying constituents required to make themselves Hebrew and Greco–Roman. So no, these festivals were not “hijacked.” It is merely that masses of people who had once celebrated them decided not to observe them, or their religions comprising them; and decided to celebrate other things, with the guidance and consideration of their disciplers.

Although in modern parlance it is called Christmas(Christ mass) and has religious elements, it is in fact hung upon a clothes horse composed of a conglomeration of pagan seasonal observances and Cover The Earth White T Shirt. The feasting elements in particular are pagan rites at the end of autumn and the winter solstice. The bringing of greenery into the home in the form of holly, fir boughs and mistletoe is also a pagan tradition. Christmas trees were introduced into Victorian Britain by Queen Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert who brought the tradition over from his native Germany. The palace did so everyone else copied it and soon it was all the rage. Again a tree decorated with offerings and candles(lights) has it’s roots in Germanic pagan ritual. Much of Christmas owes it’s existence to Roman, Germanic and Celtic pagan traditions that predate Christianity by millennia. Even the folktales of Santa Claus have their roots in pagan traditions from around Europe that have become melded into the figure of Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas or Santa Claus.
