I would certainly disagree with parts of this. Also, I genuinely like Trask. I think he could go a lot higher than 3 so I do agree it’s a steal. However, hard to move on at this point, mostly logistically. Stafford’s dead cap is still $25 million to move him this offseason, which does free up $10 million, but Detroit would still then need a veteran QB, especially if they’re drafting a third round pick. Finding a bridge QB isn’t cheap…Ryan Fitzpatrick costs Miami $8 million dollars, Tyrod Taylor costs LAC $7.5 million. That’s cancelling out all the savings you’d get from moving Stafford. Add onto that Detroit’s defense still sucks. Not really worth it to waste the cheap years of a rookie deal trying to build an actual defense, especially when you don’t have a fifth-year option to control the price. That drastically lowers the window that others teams have exploited to build contenders. If Trask becomes the franchise QB, they’ll be one offseason removed from still paying some dead cap hits on Stafford’s deal before they need to sign Trask to a big time extension. They’ll have to move on here soon, but 2022 is about ten times more efficient, and with COVID squeezing the cap for the next few seasons, I think it’d be a really bad idea to start that process now. Trask slipping to three is the only tempting part about it, but even then, still shakes out much better next year.
