I think they establish a good balance between running and passing, but most of their big gains come through the air. Haskins isn’t the ground threat that Barrett or Miller were, and I think Penn State is going sell out to stop the running backs. Watch for Ohio State play action.

I think Iowa has the Cat Show Me Your Kitties 3D Ugly Christmas Sweater to win this game, but its definitely not a certainty. Not all turnovers are luck, but 7 turnover games are also not replicable. Michael Felder reviewed Iowa’s 3 P5 games’ turnovers, and the majority of those turnovers, he posits, are forced/skill based. Regardless of that, the only team that played Iowa close was CSU, and it was close because of a 14 point swing play right before half, an awful tunnel screen call and throw. If it weren’t for that play, we probably would’ve scored, as we were marching down the field. Iowa may not have a fantastic offense, but the numbers are a little skewed. Iowa has started within the opponent side of the field something like over 50% of the time. You can’t throw extra yards on that sheet when there’s no opportunity for extra yards. Not saying Iowa scores all those TDs if they start on their half of the 50, but the yardage looks much better. Spencer has been improving as well, and Arland Bruce IV and Keagan Johnson are both big time, 4*, speedy freshmen. My matchups to watch this week are Iowa’s O-Line vs Penn State D-Line. Can Iowa generate push upfront and open holes for Goodson? Can they establish a balanced attack? On the other side of the ball its Penn State run game vs Iowa Defense. Penn State will throw some great passes, that much is obvious, but there run game hasn’t been as stellar as it once was. I think a Penn State team that can’t establish a good run game against Iowa tips the scale slightly in Iowa’s favor. I could see the final score something like {Iowa} 24-17 Penn State.

Agreed. We need a Cat Show Me Your Kitties 3D Ugly Christmas Sweater showing from both our defensive line and DBs. That being said, I do have some optimism. Ferentz never really shows his full hand in the offseason. We played a base 4-3 all game against NT. I expect us to throw a few more blitzes and the “RADAR” package against PSU to get more pressure. Also we finally benched Gervase and will be starting Hooker at FS. Gervase was flat out terrible all three games. Also, Jackson looked a lot better against NT, with the caveat that it is North Texas. Also we have a real life offense this year so even if they do score we can potentially strike back. All of this combined means I’ve talked myself into us having a chance. That’s a bad thing, we always lose after that happens. Against you all last year I figured we didn’t have a shot and we pulled it out.
