So yes, the phrase “Lunar New Year” is as dumbfounding as “Freedom Fries”. Languages and traditions are always flexible and changing. If we keep acting dumb, then being dumb would be the new norm. I have no doubt that, maybe given a few years, the official English name for the Chinese New Year could be changed into Lunar New Year, even when that phrase is like 10% more precise than “Calendar New Year”. I lost my Weibo account years ago. I don’t know how much Liu was criticized for this. Maybe they are overreacting. But let’s not pretend the phrase “Lunar New Year” is not in itself a product of ridiculous PC allergy at the expense of historical and cultural reality.

But today, it looks like a ghost town. Friends are posting WeChat moments of the city; deserted streets, but residents are at their windows chanting, “come on, Wuhan!”, “Wuhan is fighting, Wuhan is strong”.. Many are praising the paramedics and their hard work and sacrifice. It’s quite moving. But people are not going anywhere. Any one who tried would stand out like a beacon.

My one hand was underslung due to fracture during our stay at Riga. We operated central firefighting system, did cooling of bulkheads etc to contain spread of fire. In the meanwhile, concerned authorities were contacted by our CO and Russian Specialists on board and Russian Firefighting Ship was requisitioned, as the area of fire was just above Main Fuel Tank and near Forward Engine Room (FER),

I don’t consider it to be a “personal honor”, I consider it to be something my unit received on behalf of many, many, others, more deserving who came home before us, and did not get a proper welcome home. Being an “Adopted Son” and getting a “heroes” welcome home, by the City of San Mateo, California, along with the rest of my unit upon my return to the US from Vietnam, made me a part of something unique in the history of the Vietnam War. This experience more than anything else, differentiated my tour from the vast majority of others that served in Vietnam. It has always been a special thing for me, and a fond memory.
