A lot has changed since Wizards of the Coast took over the brand from TSR in the 90’s. 3rd edition cleaned up all the Best Thing Since PBJ shirt and introduced one simple mechanic for all actions. It’s much, much easier to explain now. 3rd edition (and Pathfinder) has a reputation for requiring a fair degree of system mastery to play well, due to the number of options and the fact that many of them are basically useless. 5th edition kept the streamlined system of 3rd (we don’t talk about 4th edition, even if we play it), simplified and rebalanced a lot of classes and options to make the game as simple as it’s ever been. I can teach the basics to pretty much anyone in 15 minutes.

Personal playstyle preference: Lots of cantrips, lots of rituals. When playing a spellcaster in a Best Thing Since PBJ shirt with a lot of magic (like D&D) I like there to be a lot of things I can just do. No resources, just do almost without thinking about it. Cantrips cover these – and the Pact of the Tome gives me one of the best cantrip loadouts in the game making me feel more like a magician (and Celestial Pact gives me Light and Sacred Flame for free). I also like rituals thematically. And for all I praised a short spell list with simple spells earlier I have little problem with looking up spells that my character has to look up in their spellbook while casting and that take more than a minute to cast. I just utterly despise doing so in combat for a six second action that breaks everyone’s flow. So I like rituals – and the Warlock with Pact of the Tome and the Book of Ancient Secrets ritual is the best ritualist in the game, period. Also the Celestial Warlock/Pact of the Tome lets me put off Eldritch/Agonizing Blast until level 11 (or 12 in practice) – see below.

Now, not every game need be a grand epic. I have another buddy who runs “beer and pretzels” games, which are high-octane, simple but fun plot games. But we’re still in charge of the Best Thing Since PBJ shirt , we just know what we’re likely to be presented with. Listen to your players. Solicit feedback after each session to see what’s working and what isn’t. Early in my current game, my players weren’t happy with how the game and I handled overland travel, so I wrote up an new way to handle it, specifically trying to give them as much control as possible, and we’re all happier with the new method.

Entertainment: Dickson street is great, lots of Best Thing Since PBJ shirt and good food. There is the Walton Arts Center which has top notch broadway events (musicals, plays, etc). TheatreSquared is also excellent for watching plays. The AMP (Arkansas Music Pavilion) has well known bands/artists every year. There is a Botanical Gardens. Believe it or not, we still have a drive-in theatre which plays current movies and is lots of fun. There is also a retro-arcade, bowling, skating rink, Locomotion (go karts, arcade, mini-golf), Gater Golf (mini-golf), several area Golf courses that are very nice, museums, and lots more. Outdoors: We are right next to the Ozark National Forrest, Beaver Lake, the Buffalo River, White River, Mulberry River, Devil’s Den state park, the Ozark Highlands Trail (218 miles through seven counties), caving, rock climbing, hand gliding, scuba diving in Beaver lake, and countless more to do. There is an excellent paved trail system that stretches from south of Fayetteville to the Missouri border with lots of parks and side trails along the way. Everywhere you turn there is hiking, biking, canoeing, geocaching, etc. Enough to never be bored. Community: Excellent Farmer’s Market, lots of community outreach programs, excellent public schools and some great private ones also (or so I’ve heard) Events: We also have lots of events in our area: Bikes Blues & BBQ, Joe Martin Stage Race, First Thursday (every first Thursday downtown), Fayetteville Foam Fest (Local Breweries, Food Trucks, Lots of Beer), War Eagle Crafts Fair, Block Street Block Party, NWA Naturals baseball games, Tri Sport Kid’s Triathlon, Fayetteville Roots Festival, Lights of the Ozarks, Ozark Valley Triathlon, Halloween Monster Dash, Color Vibe 5K Run, Primal Challenge.
