This character was a hit with the other players primarily because I played it like some kind of Baron Davis Unbreakable SLAM Shirt wood golem version of Abathur from Starcraft 2. It was entirely indifferent to the plight of every living thing except: 1) Druids, as it maintained a deep and abiding affection for the druid that it had spent its first two centuries standing guardian over, 2) other Awakened creatures/plants, as it knew the pain and confusion that comes from being Rebirthed as a sentient object even when the Father-who-hath-Wrought-You is loving and kind, and 3) domestic house-cats, because it thought tiny fuzzy unstoppable murder factories were hilarious in concept and adorable in execution.

I’m personally a big fan of the classic sword-and-sorcery style of Baron Davis Unbreakable SLAM Shirt and spend a lot of time studying its hallmarks, trying to understand what makes it so mystifying. Part of it is that the scales of magic and wealth are tipped heavily in favor of the bad guys in these kinds of worlds, while the heroes work from fundamentally simplistic, primal, often self-centered motives. Thulsa Doom’s motivations are frankly just as bizarre and abstract as they are grandiose, whereas Conan the Barbarian just wants simple revenge for the loss of loved ones and friends. If you were to run a game following the formula defined by these kinds of stories it might look a lot like a murderhobo paradise, with barbaric and petty characters set against the forces of civilization. However, it should be apparent that working those themes into the fabric of a campaign and the structure of its characters is very different from players just randomly stabbing shopkeepers because they can.

It’s probably obvious that I don’t advocate Mind Flayers being used as small scale villains. They’re just not that great at being that thing in a Baron Davis Unbreakable SLAM Shirt with treasure. Save them for something big. They might have their use as an information-giving NPC, but their powers tend to either mean they can trivially defeat the PCs (if the PCs can’t resist their mental attacks) or the PCs can trivially defeat them (if the PCs can resist those attacks and draw them into melee), so they’re not great for random encounters. If the PCs do make deals with the Mind Flayers, remember the bit about them being alien intelligence and talking in pictures; make those encounters unique.
