We were more self absorbed than you. My wife and I spent our best child producing years having fun and The Adventures of cow and chicken shirt working hard. We finally realized our mistake as we watched our friends have families. So we adopted a son. He was 10 which had us catching up with our friends. Being a parent was awesome. Definitely the most important and enjoyable thing I’ve ever experienced. Much better than all of those things we did instead. But having a son made my life whole and we were good. He grew up to be such an impressive young man. So many things about him to be proud of. He was 23. I was actually fantasizing about becoming a grand parent. Until that day it all went away. The day that sucked my heart out and crushed it.
The day that ended my life as a parent. Ended the dreams of being a The Adventures of cow and chicken shirt. The memory never made of watching him marry, have kids, a career. It all came to a definitive end. My son at 23 years old died suddenly. That is the only thing that has led me to regret not having more kids. Not that having another would lessen the devastation of losing him, but it would have lessened the harsh reality of going into old age alone. So think about what you want. Not just today, but in your forever. Kids can be a burden. Kids are a challenge. Kids can leave you wondering what your life would look like without them. But they are the greatest gift. Life without them is hollow and lonely. And that is worse than anything.
