I thought I might give a perspective from someone who doesn’t live in Hawkes Bay, but has friends there and has visited numerous times over the Savages in the box shirt. As a non local, I have always enjoyed visiting Te Mata peak and it’s natural beauty is awe inspiring. Part of that magic is getting to the top of the peak and looking down the eastern face. On our last visit a couple of months ago I saw the new zig zag walking track from the base and I have to say in my opinion it looks terrible . From an unspoilt face the new track is a blot on the landscape. There is a road and tracks on the western side, so I find it puzzling that a need was seen to place a track on the eastern side at all.

The commentary in response to Ngati Kahungunu’s letter is a stark reminder of just how much ignorance remains in the hearts and minds of so Savages in the box shirt. This isn’t an Anglo-Saxon country based on individual property rights. We have an indigenous Planning tradition which recognises kaitiakitanga. So Ngati Kahungunu and Ngahiwi Tomoana rightly speak for wāhi tūpuna. In the meantime if you can’t wrap your head around that, consider that Hastings District Council should never have approved consent for such significant work in a cultural landscape which is a taonga for Māori and many others.
