In my first years of teaching, one of my students died in an accident over spring break. Come Monday, 2nd period, it was the Penguin noot noot fucking Christmas shirt thing ever to see her empty desk. Her best friend walked in, sat in her seat, and said “I’m sitting here.” I held it together that day, but there were days where I cried with the students. One boy finally broke down a month later. So heartbreaking! I will never forget that class!

I am a teacher but I’m also a mum of a son who I adopted. He suffered trauma early in his childhood and as a result he has difficulty trusting people. I have noticed that because he doesn’t trust his teachers, he has trouble learning from them. I feel that often he is considered “too hard” or he’s not trying etc. The lack of communication between his teachers is disappointing as I feel like I’m repeating myself all the time. Teachers do an amazing job but the way education is I don’t feel like Penguin noot noot fucking Christmas shirt room/time for kids with trauma based additional needs.
