One lady said to me that “ balling the queen” normally happens when the young queen gets scared and lets off a certain pheromone that makes the worker bees attack her thinking she is a foreign bee. Having read this next time it happened.

I rescued my queen and I’m A Keeper Beekeeper shirt, added queen candy and re introduced her to them and by the time the ate the candy they accepted her again. However they supercedured one of them a month later, but she may have been injured in the fight? Hope this helps. Can you please post any info if you find out more why this happens.
