It’s an incredibly risky and exploitive business to get yourself wrapped into. Most trainees don’t even get a title to debut and the few that do could be stuck in the trainee period for upwards of 10 years. If as a trainee you no longer feel being an idol is the right path for you and want to leave before your contract expires, you may be made to repay the company for the months you trained with them PLUS the months still left on the contract. This could put you thousands of dollars in debt. Even if you’re the lucky person to debut, for the first few years you get payed very little if at all. Despite what you see, the idol life is not pretty.
What is shown to you is merely a title. Many idols suffer from depression, anxiety, and insomnia due to the extreme amount of stress they are under. You may have restricted access to communication (cell phones) depending on your company. You could go months or even years with out seeing your friends or family. I’d imagine it’s get very lonely. If you don’t fit the company’s beauty standard you could be starved and/or forced to have plastic surgery. It’s not uncommon for idols to have eating disorders because of the pressure that is put on them to be thin. You could be beaten and abused by your manager or staff. Worse case scenario you could be pimped out to wealthy businessmen or actors so your company could make a little extra coin. The K-Pop industry is brutal. If you pay attention you can tell just how unhappy a lot of these idols are and just how mistreated they are by their company. If making music is your passion, you’d be better off becoming an independent artist. Don’t sacrifice your time and health for something that is not absolute.
